Pennsylvania Action Alert from Friends of Animals

Tell the Temperance House That There is Nothing Romantic About Animal Exploitation!

For Immediate Release: 28 January 2010
For information and interviews, contact Brandon Gittelman, Director of Media Relations, Friends of Animals, Pennsylvania Chapter: brandon@foaphilly.org

We need your help in making a quick phone call that could stop the Temperance House restaurant in Newtown, PA from using horse-drawn carriages as part of their Valentine’s weekend festivities. They plan to offer “romantic horse & carriages rides through historic Newtown” on Saturday, February 13. We are confident that the Temperance House can find other ways to entertain their customers and carry on the historic richness of Newtown without resorting to a dangerous and exploitative tradition.

You can help us to stop the exploitation of horses before it starts in Newtown, by making a polite call to the district manager of the Temperance House, Erica Dara, at 215.860.9975. Let her know that forcing horses to pull people around the streets of Newtown is not romantic.

Please also send an e-mail to the restaurant at info@temperancehouse.com.

Horse-Drawn Carriage Protest: Sunday, December 20, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Join PA Friends of Animals in speaking out against horse-drawn carriages. Ordinarily we protest only at 5th and Chestnut and at 6th and Chestnut. Unless Macy’s or the Wannamaker Building takes action to send the horse-drawn carriages away from its front door, we will be protesting in front of Macy’s (1300 Market St) as well. E-mail Brandon@foaphilly.org to let him know you’ll participate and to determine which location to show up at.

In the meantime, please make polite calls to the people who can stop this expansion of the horse-drawn carriages:

Jim Kenney, General Manager of Macy’s, can be reached by calling 215-241-9000. Let the recorded message play for 5 seconds, then hit zero and ask the operator for Jim Kenney. You can also reach Jim by dialing 215-241-9000, dialing 1 after the message starts, and then dialing his direct extension at 2755.

Marita Osbourne, General Manager of Wanamaker Building, can be reached at 215-851-0406.

Philadelphia Action Alert: Boycott Macy’s Until They Put an End to Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides at Their Store

Date: 10 December 2009
For information and interviews, contact Brandon Gittelman, Director of Media Relations, Friends of Animals, Pennsylvania Chapter: 917-328-9873; brandon@foaphilly.org

We need your help in making two quick phone calls that could end a December promotion of horse-drawn carriage rides in front of the Wanamaker Building, downtown at 1300 Market Street. Macy’s refuses to take a stand against the exploitation of horses going on directly in front of its main entrance this holiday season. Please tell Macy’s you won’t accept their complicity in this exploitive practice.

Macy’s management and the Wanamaker Building management, which houses Macy’s, have been informed through repeated phone conversations that horse exploitation is not appropriately offered up to their customers as a festive holiday treat. With Friends of Animals’ effort to enact legislation to ban horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia gaining strides, why would Macy’s take a step backwards by allowing an archaic and disrespectful industry to set up at its front door?

Please make polite calls to the people who can stop this promotion. Tell them that you won’t be shopping at any Macy’s store until this stops, and that you’ll be telling everyone you know to not only boycott Macy’s, but to also join the protests Friends of Animals will organize on Sunday, the 20th of December in front of Macy’s if the rides don’t stop.

Have a few more minutes? Then help us out and support the horses in a further way. These carriages are licensed by the city, so contact Councilmember Frank DiCicco and Mayor Nutter to give them the message: C’mon, people. It’s not festive to make horses cart us around.

Councilmember Frank DiCicco: 215-686-3458 or 215-686-3459

Friends of Animals and CARE Sue to Stop National Park Service Deer Control Plans

Suit challenges plan to kill nearly 80 percent of deer living at Valley Forge

For Immediate Release: 12 November 2009

Lee Hall, Legal Director, Friends of Animals
E-mail: leehall[AT]friendsofanimals.org
Internet: www.friendsofanimals.org
Local (Pennsylvania) Internet: www.foaphilly.org

Michael Harris, Director of the Environmental Law Clinic, University of Denver Sturm College of Law
E-mail: mharris[AT]law.du.edu

Philadelphia, PA — Friends of Animals, an advocacy organization founded in 1957, is suing the U.S. National Park Service to stop a proposed deer-control plan for Valley Forge National Historical Park.

Just a few minutes west of Philadelphia, Valley Forge Park is historically known as a six-month headquarters for George Washington during the Continental Army’s encampment in 1777. Today, it is known as a five-mile spot of peace and safety for animal life in the midst of suburban shopping malls and road works.

Under the government’s “White-Tailed Deer Management Plan,” however, rifle-toting agents would enter the park to kill the vast majority of the deer this winter, continuing the same way for at least four years.

Were this to occur, hundreds of deer would die and be dragged out of the park this winter, and the deer, following their nature, would rebound with extra fawns in spring, turning the plan into a long-term cycle of violence.

“The government’s desire to deploy a rifle team to war on the deer lacks biological, ecological, and ethical sense,” said Lee Hall, legal director for Friends of Animals.

“That park officials would actually encourage local residents to believe deer have no business on the land the minute they do something inconvenient — even including the ingestion of ornamental plants — is not responsible leadership.”

Allison Memmo Geiger, president of co-plaintiff CARE (Compassion for Animals, Respect for the Environment), said, “Valley Forge National Historic Park’s managers and the National Park Service have displayed a lack of respect for nature, for those of us who enjoy and pass through the park, and for the deer whose habitat is the park.”

Noting that the government proposal includes spending future years controlling the deer with a lab-created birth control substance, Geiger stated, “I’m not sure which is worse — shooting deer or wreaking havoc on their biology and their social and reproductive interactions by imposing birth control on them.”

Additionally, the suit charges that shooting the deer endangers public safety and ignores local laws. Eerie Insurance Company research shows that cars hit deer the most when the deer are being hunted, with the opening day of hunting season and the first Saturday of hunting season being the highest days for these accidents.

“The park has decided it’s OK to discharge firearms in this small park so close to roads and developments — adding to the mix a population of suddenly frightened deer? This is unacceptable,” said Geiger.

The deer are not responsible for the park’s manicured lawns, for deliberate removals of natural vegetation over the years and the planting of non-native foliage, for a lack of respect for the animals comprising the park’s natural food web, for paved areas and buildings, for more than a million visitors per year, vehicle exhaust, or for the constant presence of (often speeding) cars. These factors must be addressed directly to address the pressure on the deer, Friends of Animals and CARE have urged.

The lawsuit alleges the Park Service’s White-tailed Deer Management Plan for the Valley Forge National Historical Park violates federal law, including the National Environmental Policy Act, the Organic Act and the park’s enabling legislation.

“Decisions under the National Environmental Policy Act cannot be based simply on seizing upon the apparently easiest answer to a perceived problem, said Hall. “Killing deer is not the answer to the decline of plant life in a sprawling, concrete-covered suburb.”

“Like any conscious beings, moreover, deer need special concern in decisions involving the ecological balance of a space; and our government needs to stop disregarding common sense and ethics.”

The suit names Mike Caldwell, Superintendent of Valley Forge National Historical Park, the National Park Service, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis, and National Park Service Regional Director for the Northeast Dennis R. Reidenbach.

On behalf of Friends of Animals and CARE, Lee Hall expressed appreciation for the outstanding legal work on the case by the University of Denver – Sturm College of Law Environmental Law Clinic, directed by Professor Michael Harris. The lawsuit is being filed in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

October Events – Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in Philadelphia

Please support our campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia by joining us for two events in October. We will be having a peaceful protest on Sunday, October 18, from 12:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m. (5th & Chestnut – NE Corner).

On Saturday, October 24, we will be leafleting in South Philly from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. Our last leafleting event was very successful as we distributed almost 7,000 fliers, but we definitely need more help to get through the rest of District 1. The details for this event are the same as last time (please see below).

Please e-mail me at brandon@foaphilly.org if you are able to attend either of these two events.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Brandon
